W(E)AVING (2024)

digital image generated through JavaScript

The artwork is a digital image generated through computer language. Every contributor will influence the final visual outcome. It is also a durational work which means the image will keep changing, developing and renewing as new contributors providing inputs to the work. Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is a community composed by each of us. We are, directly or indirectly connected to and influenced by each other. All these (in)direct connections are like strings that weave into the WUR community.

The artist responds to the themes of inclusion and decolonisation by embracing the differences of each individual within WUR. In this project, she is not trying to propose how should an inclusive institute look like, and not attempting to give a judgment about decolonisation. She chooses to approach these themes by making the composition of WUR as an institute visible – What are our roles? Where do we come from? What are the influences shape and affect us as a person the most? By doing this, YiLing wants to leave space for people to define their meanings of inclusion and decolonisation. If you would like to contribute to the artwork, you can fill in this questionnaire (exclusively for people who are part of WUR).

This artwork is in collaboration with the programmer Arturo Garrido and is commissioned by DARE project (2021-2024).

DARE is a 3-year project (2021-2024) formed by WUR and the Anti-Racism Association in Wageningen to tackle Racism and Discrimination in a broader sense. The goal is to establish anti- discrimination policies, practices and procedures, and usher in a culture of Decolonization, Anti- Racism, Anti-Discrimination, Equity and Equal Chances.
